"I had an interesting troop committee meeting yesterday. Someone asked
"when the next troop campout was. Mind you, our SM is not one for long
"term planning. He said it was the 23rd of this month at Camp Lewis,
"one of our council's camps. The way he worded the reply made me believe
"that he was just now expressing this idea to us for the first time. I
"remember him mentioning it as a possibility last month, but I could tell
"he hadn't done much in the way of planning.
"I asked if a reservation form had been completed. No had. No one had
"done it. I pointed out that there was now less than two weeks before
"this campout and that the council camps are frequently booked up by
"a month prior at the latest. The Scoutmaster's reply to this was something
"like, "Well, if we can't get Camp Lewis, we'll just camp in my backyard
"Fortunately, another veteran of Scouting like myself spoke up and agreed
"with me that back yard camping was not acceptable.
"So, now for the big question. Is camping in a back yard something anyone
"on the list does? More questions: Are there any policies against this?
"What are some of the dangers you see?
"BTW, in case you haven't noticed, the SM is doing all the planning, which
"is, of course, the big mistake here.
One of the first problems that I see here is that the program doesn't seem
to be "Boy run". Generally, the boys should be planning these activities
in the PLC, with the Troop Committee providing the approval and implementation.
At least that's the way that I understand it.
Second, Has anybody ever offered to help the SM with any of these campouts?
If the Troop is of any size at all, doing ALL the administration is beyond the
capabilities of everybody except "Sam the Super SM". Our Troop has an Advance-
ment Chairman, **OUTDOOR CHAIRMAN**, Fundraising Chairman, ... The responsi-
bilities of the OC are to take care of the RESERVATIONs/planning and permission
slips for the outings.
