Just a note to keep you all current on the Troop 18 situation.
Will The Troop fold? Never! I was very upset when I first posted and may have
given the impression that we would pack it in. This is somewhat different than
the situation of any resignations which I will address below. Our committee
and myself have not resigned. I am now setting up a meeting with parents of
the boys in an attempt to build a new committee and locate an Acting SM.
Parents who were not very involved before are stepping up. The chartering
organization will dismiss the parents of the Eagle wannabe from their
committee posts. I will stay as SM until a replacement is found, got eye on a
good one right now. We will know more after this weekend. The first meeting of
the troop will be postponed a week, maybe two. We are rising from the ashes.
All of the posts that indicated I was abandoning the boys, spiting ourselves
and just plain old quitting really hit home. I asked myself "Am I doing my
best?" Well, I mean to tell you, I don't know the meaning of the word quit!
The posts that said some very, very kind words are much appreciated and
humbling. I will not give up the boys of the troop. I will work with renewed
dedication to making the troop one that the boys can be proud of.
Yesterday I posted a little more detail of the politics involved. We fear the
power of the parties involved and do not believe that it won't be used. One
word said to the wrong boy at the wrong time could have devastating affects on
me personally. It's a risk that I (and the committee) can not take. A SCOUT IS
BRAVE. But he aint stupid either. Since we are sure that the troop will be in
good hands, there will not be a break-up or transfers. My son will be there
doing what he can to help the new SM. I will attend as many functions as
possible as a parent. No twisting my arm to drive for a trip or pick up trash
on our adopted highway, I'll be there. As you all know there is lots to do to
aid a troop without wearing a brown shit with patches.
As far as the Eagle Application, I faxed a formal request that the Eagle
Application not be processed along with supporting paperwork to BSA National,
followed up with FED-EX. Calls to National have further alerted them to this
I would appreciate any support you all my want to give. Calls to Mr. T.J.
VanHouten at National in Irving TX on our behalf would be most welcome. Even
if you don't agree with us, you gotta believe that it bears some extra
scrutiny. Letters to National (cc'ed to our Council) are also welcome.

I thank you all again for your kind words and will attempt to reply in some
manner to each of you who wrote.
One last item, several have asked for the home address of the boy. As much as
I would like to, I can't provide it either thru the list or by private E-mail.
I must respect the confidentiality of a 14 year old. You may be able to send a
sealed letter to him thru the Twin Rivers Council, 253 Washington Avenue Ext.
Albany, NY 12205. My address will be available by private E-mail. Your notes
and letters are important to me, but please send them to National and Twin
