Paul, as upset as you should be by this whole mess, I think that what
amounts to abandoning the troop, which may amount to the disbanding of the
troop, may do a while lot more harm than good - even if it's based on
principles. The boys in the troop have done absolutely nothing wrong, yet
they will be hurt the most. The pseudo-Eagle will still get his Eagle,
the Eagle Review board who conducted the BoR will still be in place, and
your boys will be out on the street. When and **if** they join a new
troop, the Eagles that are earned will be tainted by the Eagle neither
earned nor deserved.
Is it too late to go to National and describe what went on here? I
believe they are ultimately responsible for approving Eagle rank. Even if
it is too late, whatever happened in your case should not be allowed to
happen again. Lodging a protest may make you feel better, but wouldn't it
be better to fix the problem? The boys who stay in Scouting, including
your son, will still be subject to a system with which you and your
committee can't live. I can't believe that your district's Eagle Board
has no one to answer to.
Please don't give up until all avenues are exhausted.
