Having read several replies from "people kinda in the know" about the
Philmont lottery, I'd like some feedback:
When I was at Philmont this summer, I dropped in on Betty at
Registration and asked how our odds were looking since our troop is #209
on the waiting list. It was explained to me that the 209 really doesn't
mean anything. When I sent in my lottery card I put down 5(?) dates and
checked the "will take any date" box. However, since I didn't make the
first cut I am now "locked in" on the first date on my card and am now
#3 on the waiting list for that date. (The odds of getting in on this
date are about zero, since the other 20ish groups on that date have
already sent in their appropriate registration moneys.) Apparently, the
"will take any date" box only applies for the original drawing.
Needless to say this rather chapped my grits, but I got over it and
we're now making extensive plans for some backpacking/whitewater in
Colorado. We'll miss the program elements available at Philmont, but
the key group dynamics that turn boys into men will still be there.
