===>> There is talk in my council of the schools going to a year round
school program perhaps next year.
===>> My question is what does this do to the Scouting program, especially
the summer camp programs.
I was involved in a school district who wanted to do this... to save money
and use the existing school site to handle more students. First a little
The present school 'year' was designed in the USA back when a majority of us
were farmers and needed our kids to help in the major growing season
(summer) to help in the fields harvesting etc... It is no longer a valid
reason for the schedule. Many today aren't happy with the combination of
winter school and day-light-savings time (another topic for another time).
Since the 1800's we have molded our lives around this schedule and though
most of us are no longer farmers, we now have summer camp, family vacations,
and other long held traditions that depend on the kids being out of school
in the summer.
The school district my kids were in that wanted to go to year-round school
announced that they would be changing to this scheme, and wanted feedback.
Many parents of Scouters and others who enjoyed their family vacation time
in the summer protested (remember we the parents control the school
district, if no other way than be voting into office the School Dist.
Superintendent). There were parents meetings held, and letters and calls to
the School Dist. Office, and finally a meeting with the District Admin
The bottom line was they wanted to save $$ and not hire more teachers to
handle the growing number of kids in the schools... we wanted our schedule
left alone... We brought up the topic of budgets and they started backing
down (I suspect they didn't want us 'parents' getting involved in the budget
review process). The end result was they took one school in each grade range
and made it a year-round school, and left the rest alone... allowing anyone
in those singel schools who wanted to, to transfer to the other schools with
the old schedules.
It qorked for us, maybe it can work for you too??
Remember, they can only do it to you if you let them... as parents you still
have a say, and still have control over what happens to your kids.
