There was some discussion on mountain biking as an activity that scouts
can relate to. There were also comments about the environmental impact
of mountain biking (and weither it was legitimate concern).
This year, Philmont Scout Ranch offered a Mountain Biking program. This
was offered at Iris Park in the Valle Vidal (Part of the Kit Carson
National Forest, located north of Philmont property; the BSA has been
expanding it's usage of this property in recent years).
Due to the limited length of my trek, I was not able to visit this camp
and see this program. However, during discussion with Dave Bates
(Philmont Director of Program) during the Philmont Staff Association
meeting, I found that the program was an organized ride which must be
reserved similar to the horse rides on the ranch. Philmont recieved a
$25,000 donation from a former staff member to start the program. The
area where this program is located is relatively flat and they are using
some of the old logging roads in the area for trails.
My impression was that the program was popular with those who had tried
it and it would be continued.
Is anyone out there who took part in the program who can give more
comments than I have?
On a side note, within the next couple of days, I will post more
information that I learned while I was at the ranch.
