I've been reading with interest this continuing story only to find that
you're describing what in Australia would be called pom-poms and are
traditionally worn on knitted woollen hats called beanies - often in the
colours of your favourite football team.
Another good way to make them is to take two pieces of card cut into
circles. In the centre of the circle cut another one so that you get two
Wrap wool yarn around the donut (ie thru the centre hole and around both
cards) continue until the centre hole can take no more. Cut the strands at
the point where they cross the gap between the two donuts - RU still with me
??? Take a strand of wool yarn and slip between the cards and tie all the
strands with a reef (square) knot. Remove the cards and the strands should
fluff out into the pom pom. Trim to the desired evenness.
