Re: Expensive Wood Badge fee?

I just completed the course last March in Gulf Stream Council. The cost was
$130.00, and included meals, tents, facilities and the course materials, all
given out over three weekends. I also had to buy about $175.00 worth of
additional items, such as two new shirts, two pair of shorts, a Scout hat (I
usually wear the Campaign hat), and various camping equipment, because what I
had was either missing or in bad disrepair from years of use. I took this as
an excuse to go on a buying spree.
I've been through management seminars costing many times that amount, and got
less out of it. If you can, by all means GO!
I know that the requirements did state two years active leadership in a Boy
Scout Troop, but I also know that Commissioners who show interest get
"invited" too, especially if they are in a Troop support role.
Now, about that "invitation": here in the US, the course size is limited to
64 participants (eight patrols of eight), but I have rarely heard of a course
that size. The invites follow this sequence here: the course is announced,
those interested parties let their Commissioners or District Executives know
they are interested in attending, and those persons are "invited." Then, it
is up to each peerson to respond. That way, resourses are not wasted (paper
and time) on those who aren't interested.
