Since there have been a few success stories in the last week, I thought I'd
ask for some advice from those who have learned the art of diplomacy better
I'm the Public Relations Chair for my Councils Exploring Committee. I've got
a PR / Marketing background as well as being an independent business owner.
The Committee head (Exploring VP for the Council) is an Engineer at a local
Aerospace company, though not a functional manager of a team in his job.
The Committee is putting together a document listing all the Council's
Explorer Posts, including info about where and when they meet, the advisor,
contact info, activities, etc...
The Exploring VP asked me to head the project and coordinate the creation
and completion of this directory of Posts... I accepted the task.
The directory is to be distributed to all the area High Schools through the
career counselors, etc. (maybe 20,000 copies total). He would like to have
information about each Posts "first nighter" in the directory (most in Sept.
a few in June). I suggested putting the first-nighter info on a perferated
card taht could be removed and carried in a wallet, etc.
He wants the first-nighter info to be part of the bound document and stay in
Here's the rub... My background tells me that with most of the
first-nighters in Sept, come Nov. the info is dated and not not real useful,
and therefore most kids (who pick up a copy in Nov. or Dec. or Jan...) will
see the "old" dates and assume the whole directory is 'dated' and toss it.
We want them to hang onto it all (school) year and call any Post directly
that they might be interested in, and go to one of their regular meetings,
not just go if there is a first-nighter scheduled.
He says that the kids will do what we want even if the first-nighters are
past for most Posts.
Do I raise the issue to the full committee and present my views and ask
them to decide if the first-nighter info should be bound in, or on a perf
card that can be removed so the rest of the directory has generic info on
meeting times/dates, etc... and isn't 'dated'... or do I just bow out of the
issue and let him direct this area of the document??
Small issue I agree (we never have BIG problems <g>) but one that my
background says is important to the overall project.
PS. I've never been real diplomatic <g>.
