It seems to me that the issue of YPP, Two Deep Leadership and the
showerhouse at camp has a fairly simple solution, although it requires some
logistical planning and coordination. It also requires that the Troop
showers as a unit.
Here's how it would work. The Troop goes to the showerhouse as a unit. The
SM, ASM, SPL & ASPL remain outside of the showerhouse (thus keeping within
YPP guidelines). The rest of the boys go in and "do thier thing" while the
aforementioned leadres remain outside. After the boys have finished, the
SPL & ASPL can shower. After the SPL & ASPL have showered, the SM & ASM can
shower. At no time are the boys unescorted or exposed to a lone adult. Nor
can the adults enter the showerhouse while the boys are "en deshabile."
Will there be horseplay and fooling around?? Of course. These are, after
all, "boys in a locker room". However, the SPL and ASPL act as a "liason"
or buffer between the boys and the adults. They are "free" to enter the
showerhouse (together) if necessary while the boys are there and report back
to the SM/ASM. Being older and more experienced, they have (we hope) more
common sense and can "police" a situation. As always common sense should
Does this take coordination? You bet. However in these ever more litigious
days, we have to CYA as much as possible.
