Wrote a few words and questions regarding Totin' Chip.
In what I have seen, the actual Totin Chip IS NOT required.
However, somewhere in the Tenderfoot/2nd Class/1st Class requirements
(sorry I do not have my book with me) require that a Scout show how to
properly use woodstools (knife, axe, saw). He must also prepare a
fire using these tools and then cook over it. This would also show
that the Scout (technically) does not need the Fireman Chit, either.
Both cards are good means of "guaranteeing" that a Scout has the skills
before he attempts to do these tasks unsupervised. There are no
requirements per se that say a Scout MUST earn these cards, BUT the
rank requirements are much the same as the cards themselves.
Maybe now-a-days when a Scout can work on any rank requirements at any
time, these cards become somewhat obsolete. Before the newer program,
a Scout did not learn about woodstools until 2nd Class. A little late
to help prepare fires and food as a new Scout.
