Sean Harrington (was RE: Eagle Cancer...)

Not a very good way to start a new week, but....
I've finished a long conversation with Kay Harrington, Sean's mother.
Sean Harrington, our fellow Eagle Scout who suffered long and hard
through his Eagle project while afflicted with cancer, died peacefully
in his family's home on Saturday, April 30th after returning from the
hospital on Wednesday of that week.
Many of us here and on other forums wrote notes of encouragement to
Sean back in March and April and since then, we stopped hearing
anything more. The reason why we haven't received any information
prior to this morning is because Dale Murphy, the teacher that had
served as our "go-between" has left the school and his homebound
teacher, a Mrs. Simmons, hasn't been by the family's home since Sean's
Kay explained that the computer in which Sean read some of our
comments on and printed out the rest was provided by the Make A Wish
Foundation, and was instrumental in getting him to complete the paperwork
for his Eagle project. She stated that she nor her husband don't know
how "to work it", and it's been idle since. Her husband is the
Scoutmaster of Troop 304, chartered to the United Methodist Church in
Rockledge, Florida. Sean was a member of his father's Troop.
Sean earned posthumously the Bronze Palm to his Eagle Scout Badge.
Since Ronald and Kay Harrington do not have access to the Internet, I
asked her if it would be alright that Scouters and families whom
wished to do so, can send their condolences to them through the
Central Florida Council, Sean's local Council. In talking with their
Registrar, she had indicated that the Council has been forwarding
items to Sean in the past and would continue to do so for the family.
Kay stated that this would be fine, and I am again printing the
address of the local Council for this purpose.
Anytime a child leaves this earth, I am saddened. I look at my three
children and worry constantly about their health, their welfare and
their safety. I want them all to grow and be people that could make
me proud, and more importantly, to make themselves proud. I will go
downstairs and tell them so this morning.
However, when a Life Scout tells me that "I don't have the time" to
work toward Eagle, or offers me some other stupid excuse as to why
he's not moving toward Eagle; or when a Cadette tells me that her
lovelife is more important than moving toward the highest Girl
Scouting awards -- I can point to Sean's great example and tell them
"he didn't give up. He had a lot more going on in his life than you
do, and he made it..."
He made it.
