Eddy, our troop went to Fall River last weekend. This was my second trip there
in 3 years. It really is a fun trip for the boys and the adults. A little
tip... often there are former Navy guys who are there on day visits and they
love to talk and share their experiences with the boys. I have always found
this to be a highlight of the trip.
Also, the museum that you mention (part of the overnight admission package) is
interesting and the curator, an former Navy Chief, does a 40 minute talk to
the boys about knots. Tough subject to keep them interested in for 40 minutes.
He does an outstanding job, funny, informative and very animated. By the end
of the session everyone is glued to their seat so they won't miss a thing.
Wish I could get him to one of my meetings :-) This alone is worth the price
of admission .
Last weekend was very hot and humid and the berthing areas were like an oven.
I was told that only parts of the ship have air conditioning. We didn't have
it. With proper adult supervision, it is permissible to sleep up on the main
deck. It was great! Cool breeze under the stars.
For anyone planning to go to the Battleship, make reservations early - 8-10
months ahead. In the summer they only take reservations for the AC portion of
the ship, so it fills up fast. Another tip... there were troops from all over
onboard, it might be a good idea to bring some patches for trading.
I didn't know about the historic trail but certainly will look into it when we
visit again in a few years.
