Hi, Fellow Scouters.
First, a brief "re-introduction". It's been a while since I subscribed to this
list, so a bit of introduction is in order. My name is Jeannie Dixon. I am a
leader of Junior Girl Scouts in Tallahassee, FL. I was a GS for 12 years; I
have just completed my 4th year as a GS Leader. In my "other" life, I am
Software Coordinator for the College Center for Library Automation. This
organization provides library automation to the 28 community colleges in the
state of Florida (a shared system, not a consortium).
My junior troop worked on the Contemporary Issue relating to math and science
this year and really enjoyed it. My Service Unit has asked me to plan a
science and math activity for the Fall.
In the Summer 1994 issue of "Girl Scout Leader" was a brief article on "Putting
Science to Work". This was a day-long activity in Naperville, Ill. for girl
scouts to explore science and math. It sounds very similar to what I want to
If anyone on this list worked on that activity or has done a similar one, I
would greatly appreciate hearing from you.
I need to begin the planning in July (after we get back from Savannah... for
the 4th of July!!!). The event is tentatively planned for a day-long event; I
want to gear it for Juniors (4-6 grade), but may need to include the Brownies.
We have a church hall available which will provide room for close to 200 girls.
I have access to some of the math and science teachers in the neighborhood
elementary and junior high schools. We also have 2 universities (FSU and
Florida A&M) as well as a community college in town.
Please respond to me directly, as my subscription here is in DIGEST form.
Thanks for any and all help!
Yours in Scouting,
