From the current Order of the Arrow Handbook, BSA # 34996, page 59:
" Sashes my not be altered in any way or form. Beading or any other
material is not permitted on the sash. Nothing is to be worn on the
sash, including signatures, patches of any kind, pins or legends. The
only exceptions are the 50th and 60th annisversary awards. These may
be worn as an option, for those who have earned them, on the shoulder
portion above the bard at the point of the arrow. "
From Mike Walton (with no reference book to back him up...purely
"The Order of the Arrow sash to many Scouters, in and out of the
Order, is considered to be a "sacred item". It is to be worn with
the respect and honor it represents. If you feel that in beading your
personal sash will create more interest in the Order, will allow you
to represent the Order in an increased public light, or which will
allow you to show pride and "ownership" in the Order; then, you should
consider beading _A_ sash to be worn on those SPECIAL occasions in
which you feel would do the things that I mentioned. Signatures and
pins which you were presented or obtained during special Order of the
Arrow activities should not be displayed on the sash in which you
perform service with. Those other sash(es) should be kept and
displayed at your home, work, or school or during special Scouting
occasions (like Courts of Honor, Scouting Annisversary Month
activities and the like). Legends, either embrodered directly onto
the back or sewn to the back do very little to the Arrowman which
already knows the legend of the Order; it does absolutely nothing to
those outside the Order that have problems with the red and white sash
in the first place. Again, if you really HAVE to have a sash with the
legend on the reverse side, insure that this is worn or displayed at
activities in which you can explain the reasoning for having it there.
Otherwise, leave them off, and especially leave them off the sash(es)
in which you are to wear while performing service for your Lodge or
the local Council."
