Subject: Order or the Arrow Ordeal updates
This past weekend our local lodge had the Odeal weekend and did a fine
job in getting the camp set up for summer camp. There was over 80
new ordeal members inducted, plus brotherhood and Vigil ceremonies.
The lodge also inacted the long awaited Elangomat program. Both
my son Scott and I were asked to serve again as Elangomats.
I am not going into long details except to comment on three scouts
that completed the ordeal. 2 were special needs scouts, and one
of those 2 had downs syndrom. I was fortunate to be the Elangomat for
thier work crew on Saturday. We completed the set up of the first
campsite by lunch, and were able to help another crew in the afternoon,
after also moving the boatdocks from storage to the boating lake.
and unloaded and mover tables and chairs into the dinning tent.
I never had to REMIND those 2 about being silent, and they worked
very hard. I had another adult with me that was one of thier leaders
and he helped with the little extra explainations they needed etc.
However, more surprizing to me was the 3rd scout. While out in the
woods on Friday night, this VERY small person comes over to me and
asks me where the bathrooms are at THIS camp. Well since all the
facilties and water were not working yet, I located another adult
and we escourted this scout to a distant, working facility. On the
way back I asked this scout about his age. He proudly tells us that
he is eleven (11)! Then he asked me if there were many ANIMALS in the
woods at this camp. I asked him if he has ever been to this camp.
NO! He says. (?) My troop dosn't camp here. I asked him his rank,
he was first class with 9 merit badges!
11 years old, and elected as an honor camper to the Order of the Arrow.
IT is NO longer JUST a posibility!
