I agree with you that we need to keep that trust that parents confide
in through our programs. However, I also encourage parents to
question those Scouters that advise their son's units and to attend
meetings and activities if they have any doubts. I don't require them
to call in advance or to let me know through their child of their
attendance. On campouts, if they do plan on camping, they have to
meet the BSA's policies, but if they bring their own camping gear and
agree not to interfere with the program, I don't have a problem with
It is when we as Scouters say on one hand "We want you to ask
questions of us anytime", and when they do ask, we reply with "I can't
answer that right now" or "Can I get back with you" or the simplistic
"That's the way the BSA (the Council) says we do it" -- those times
become ones in which WE have created doubts and credibility problems
with them and their youth members.
Like any other organization, the BSA has been through a period in
which parents blindly allowed their children to come and leave with
us, thinking "that's okay...he's with those Boy Scouting people"
only later to find out that they were "Boy Scout people" only in
exterior. As a result, we had to hold on tightly to our name, what it
stands for, and the standards that we created for ourselves...very,
very tightly. By telling parents "don't worry, your son's safe with
us", we are inviting them to question why we even said that statement.
Instead, by telling them "You are welcome to become a part of us, to
see what we do and where we go and we'll let you know what our plans
are in writing so that you can make an informed decision", tells them
that you are NOT a "fly-by-night" operation but instead something
that is on-going and safe.
