Our OA Chapter held our Districts COR last month, with over 715 Scouts and
Webelos attending, and a core staff of 24 youth and 8 adult arrowmen.
We had ten events, each work 10 points to a patrol (7 pts on how they did
the event, 1 ea for "spirit", patrol yell, & patrol flag). Campsite
inspections counted towards the overall Troop award, with a perfect score
equaling 10 pts.
We had bonus points for things like registering early, arriving early /
ontime, Troops bringing along Webelos, SPL attending the Friday night
With so many patrols needing to be scored, we started last year with
computer scoring. Having score sheets from each event, for each patrol,
turned in by our staff every 45 minutes or so. (even then, it was tight to
get it all done by the Sat night campfire)
Over all Troop and Pack was determined as you had thought was best... by
averaging the various patrols for each Troop, then adding the Troops bonus
and campsite-inspection scores into it.
We presented awards to the Overall Best Troop, Overall Best Pack (for those
camping by themselves as Webelos, and not camping with a Troop), Best Scout
Patrol, Best Webelos Patrol, and Overall Best Patrol.
The 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place awards in each catagory were ribbons for their
flags. All attendies received the event patch, as well as the Top Patrol
receiving a special "gold bordered" event patch (limited to that patrol
only, with the balance (8 were ordered in the event of a large Patrol
winning) being burned in front of everyone at the campfire.
Anyway, all that to answer your question about scoring. We've found it
easiest to score on a simple "10" scale for everything, and to average the
Patrol scores for the Troop award, but to also award seperate Patrol awards.
