I grew up in New Mexico (Albuquerque), and have moved to Illinois
(Palatine, a Chicago Suburb) about 5 years ago. I got immediately involved
in Scouts when I got here.
Over the time I have been here, I have had several people comment on how
lucky I must have been living in New Mexico, since I could go to Philmont
so easily. However, I have only been to Philmont once, off season
(October) and only then for a weekend.
I don't think I have missed anything, since I have taken backpacking trips
in the same mountain range (Sangre de Christo) as Philmont -- only 60-100
miles south -- on many occasions, starting with my third campout as a Boy
When asked, I will often point out that since I was from New Mexico, I
would go backpacking in the same mountains as Philmont for free (except for

still consider it a great experience for Scouts of all ages. But given the
