I think (I hope) we still are. However, I was brought up short by a
comment this weekend. I have been after a friend of mine to send his
four boys to my troop. They are currently not in scouting, but into
everything else (sports, etc... all good stuff... great family).
I see Dave every few months (more in baseball season) and I always
say something like "I still want your boys in my troop." This
weekend he bit. But as we discussed Matthew's joining he asked
"when do you allow new boys in the troop? In the Fall? or just in
the Spring?" He was shocked when I said on any day and preferably
on any tuesday. I couldn't believe he didn't think Matt could join
except when ASKED! He recalled each of the annual drives and
assumed that was the only time a boy could join. This is the SPORTS
model where new boys can not enter once the team is formed.
I don't know the answer, but we need to keep asking. Perhaps each of
us could remember to emphasize what we think is obvious: If you don't
join now you can join on any Tuesday - Yes any Tuesday in the entire
