I could be wrong.. but a few months ago there was some discussion as to
how to better retain Webelos in our district. Part of that discussion
centered on the good results people had involving the 2nd year webelo
into the troop "Family" and getting them psyched to go to summer camp
the summer right after they completed Webelos so that there was no
GAP until the next Fall. Part of this brought up the issue of involving
them in the troop as soon as possible in the spring while still helping
them finish whatever they needed in Cub Scouting. Because of liability
issues, we discussed the concept of registration and I was sure that
someone mentioned that since boys could join as early as 10.5 years in
the Boy Scouting program, that they could doubly register for a length
of time.. (maybe 6 months or so??) This may not solve your problems..
but for some boys this might be the way to go. Anyone have more info on this?
Also.. it is pretty common for packs to allow boys to work on 2 ranks
at one time within the lower ones. As long as the boy finishes everything
before the summer ends, many packs will award the first rank at the first
pack meeting and then let him work on the current one during the year.
(Though many packs caution that if you give them the books for the following
year, that ambitious boys will have the whole rank for the following year
done by Fall.. so be careful if you do this, you might just want to work
on a few casual things at Summertime activities instead of working ahead
on the next rank).
