To Scott Dillard
Scott, I agree with you that it is very important to get the new kids in at
a time such that they are able to go on a couple of regular Troop campouts
before going to Summer Camp. This also allows them to find their place in
their patrol and to get to know the other patrol members and how to work
together. I have seen some near disasters, when new kids bridge over to Boy
Scouts a week or so before summer camp. They just join and then all of a
suden they are away from home for perhaps the first time and they have no
idea of what to expect or what to do.
I know there are a lot of good Webelos leaders out there, that are running
good strong programs and can keep the kids interested and excited for the
full two years, but in many cases after 18 months they have done all they
are going to do and are just marking time.
I don't know how to address the Order of the Arrow problem, perhaps the OA
should establish a minimum age of 13 or of having been to 2 long term camps.
