My council has just come out with a new award for Assistant Scoutmasters
that in some ways is similar to the Distinguished Scoutmaster Award.
The requiremants for the award are as follows:
The nominee must :
(1) Be currently registered as an Assistant Scoutmaster and have served in
that position for a minimum of two continuous years since Jan 1992.
(2) Have completed training in current council Youth Protection Program.
(3) Have earned the Scouter's Training Award.
(4) Serve in a unit which has achieved the Quality Unit Award at least once
during his/her two year service tenure.
(5) Exemplify a role model in living the Scout Spirt by having given
noteworthy service reflecting leadership, responsibility, and humility in
promoting Scouting for all youth, regardless of race or creed.
(6) Fulfill the duties of Assistant Scoutmaster as assigned to the New Scout
Patrol, Traditional Patrol, Venture Crew, or Varsity Team, or any
combination thereof by completing six (6) or more of the following, as
certified by the Scoutmaster and the Unit Committee Chairman.
(a) Be responsible to the Scoutmaster for the New Scout Patrol, Traditional
Patrol, Venture Crew, or Varsity Team and keep the Scoutmaster informed of
their activities and progress.
(b) Work with the Troop Guide, Patrol Leader, Venture Crew Chief, or
Varsity Team Captain and counsel him on the performance of his duties.
(c) Meet with the parents of new Scouts, new crew or team members to
explain their role in support of their son and the activities and programs
of the troop, patrol, crew, or team.
(d) With at least one other adult, attend the functions planned by the
patrol, crew, or team.
(e) Using the Boy Scouts of America advancement program, show that at least
80 percent of the New Scout Patrol members or Traditional Patrol members
attain the rank of First Class within one year of joining (attach records to
(f) Assist as needed in the coordination of resources for a minimum of four
(g) Conduct advancement conferences as needed with Scouts if so assigned by
(h) Assist as needed in recruiting experts who can instruct specialized
skills or advise crew/team members where to locate resources/leagues for
(i) Work with Den Chief(s) and Webelos Den Leader(s) to encourage and
facilitate Webelos to Scout transition.
(7) Complete three (3) or more of the items below, as certified by the
Scoutmaster and the Unit Committee Chairman.
(a) Participate in the development of boy leadership through the patrol
(b) Maintain a positive relationship with the unit's chartered organization.
(c) Participate in a minimum of 50 percent of all unit outdoor programs
including one long term summer camp.
(d) Participate in the unit operations which attract and retain Scouts,
crew , or team members for more than one year.
(e) Attend ten or more district roundtable meetings.
My question is, do any of the other councils have this award, or is this a
council unique award?
