Peter Collinge votes for less emphasis in BL on sports heros, and more
stories on other types of young role models.
Peter, you perhaps overlooked part of the point our Scouts made: none of
those sports heros seemingly were good enough to be Scouts.
In the final months before the Scouts voted to drop out of the BL scene, the
magazine touted an 'all-star' football team, but not a single Scout among
them. It might just, just be possible to find 11 pro-footballers who were
Scouts. That's the group that should have received attention in BL.
The last two issues of BL that the boys received featured Larry Johnson,
Kevin Johnson, Dikembe Mutombo, Michael Jordon, Karl Malone, David Robinson.
Not a one of them admitted to being in Scouting, not a single one was
identified in the articles as even being interested in Scouting and Scouts.
Youth, yes; Scouting, nary a word.
Is there an Eagle ANYWHERE in professional sports? Does BL even care?
