Since Brian Davis intends to forward recent messages about Boys' Life to his
writer friend at BL, I'd like to add a more positive note to the discussion.
Many, if not most, troops still find BL valuable enough to purchase it for
all Scouts as a part of their regular troop budget. And, as a teacher, I'm
certainly in favor of anything that may induce Scouts to read more. Having
a magazine sent to their home each month in their name may provide that
That said, I'd also like to vote for less emphasis in BL on sports heros,
and more stories on other types of young role models.
If two brothers cannot each get their own subscription, for financial reasons,
then I've always been careful to alternate each year which name is on the
magazine. The older brother sometimes doesn't get the message that this is a
"shared subscription" until he sees the magazines start to arrive with the
younger brother's name on them.
