Thank you all for the comments on Webelos dues, it has help in planning for
Regarding BL, I'm probably remembering the past through the rose colored
mist of time, but it seems that BL is very heavily salted with sports hero
and sports cards advertising. While these are certainly areas of interest
to many boys, my youngest is one, the number of articles about
'traditional' scouting activities is lacking.
The articles on adult role models are fine, but I remember more stories
about boys doing things, both fiction and 'boy hero' reports. My eight year
old reads the comics and jokes, very few of the articles interest him;
mostly the science articles.
As for each boy getting their own copy, this should be a family choice. I
know that my youngest soon-to-be Tiger Cub will want his own copy, but that
is matter of sibling competition.
Perhaps, if each unit made the subscription to BL a individual choice then
the editors might notice a drop in subscriptions and respond. As it is, if
each unit is 'requiring' the subscription to earning a 5 cent piece of
ribbon for the flag then the editors of BL aren't going to the message from
their readers. A subscription is a subscription no matter who pays or how.
I'd recommend that you earn your Quality Unit Award without 'buying' one of
