As our troop prepared to re-register for 1993, the Scouts voted to DROP the
subscriptions to Boys' Life. We had been, for about a decade, 100% Boys'
Life. The subscriptions had, in most years, been subsidized by a benefactor.
The Scouts' reasons were three:
- Role-model emphasis of jocks who were not good enough, or interested
enough, to be Scouts (and some of them were our local Phoenix Suns heroes).
- The loss, with no comparable replacement, of Green Bar Bill and Pedro
Patrol features (even the sporadic reprints were stopped).
- photographs consistently showing improper uniforming (yes, they know what
The boys' decision was conveyed to the EDITOR of Boys' Life. We did get a
response, but it was from the Circulation Director. Obviously, he was not
able to address the issues which had been raised.
(Would anyone believe this thread started by asking about Webelos' dues?)
To take it even farther afield, were there reasons, other than financial, for
the demise of the GSUSA youth magazine? I think it was called "American
Girl"? (best use a new subject line if you tackle this one!)
