Hi Lynn, Two years ago when I lived in Candor, New York, just a few
miles from you, my cub scout and my brownie scout observed the American
Legion members dressed in uniform with a large truck load of American Flags
to be disposed of. These flags were obtained from the area cemetary where
they have replaced worn veterans flags with new. We asked to observed
and were allowed to.....
The American Legion performed a ceremony with good flags, and gun shots,
and a very formal call and read from their ceremony book. I don't
remember what they said, but it was a very solemn occasion with just their
members all in uniform, etc. and they allowed the three of us to stand in
the side lines and salute and observe their ceremony. At the end of their
solemn ceremony, they placed the flags on the open fire and they stayed
until it was distinguished.
