My wife tried the same Dump Cake recipe at home last night. Not quite like
doing it in the great outdoors, but a reasonable experiment anyway. She used a
glass baking dish. She put in the pie filling first, put the cake mix on top
of the filling, then put margarine on top. She cheated a little, since she
used some vegetable oil rather than the total amount of margarine in the recipe
-- it was easier to put on the oil.
It turned out very well. Almost sickly sweet but quite good.
The secret? Well, if you are using cast iron, greasing the dutch oven is
probably critcally important. When the recipe says don't over cook, it means
it. That may be why you ended up with concrete.
