S> Regarding the recent message about troubles in his troop, Ken Burns,
S> left out on essential point which bears on this discussion. RM, the
S> scoutmaster in question is Woodbadge trained.
Steve, did RM attend Cub Leader Wood Badge or Boy Scout Wood Badge. Even
though I have seen Boy Scout Wood Badge trained Scouters act this way, it
is 180 degrees out of phase with what Wood Badge teaches. Cub Leader Wood
Badge on the other hand does not teach the boy run program since Cub Packs
are run by the adults in BSA.
I wonder if this leader is trying to relive his youth by running things
himself. I know I have had to constantly watch myself so that I don't do
too much for my son. I was so gung ho at first that I almost drove him to
quit the troop. My wife had to take me aside and smack me upside the head
with a 2x4 to bring me to my senses. Now I try to give him the occasional
nudge toward the advancement trail and offer to help him with anything that
he has trouble with, but I won't do it for him or bug him until he does it.
He has to be the one to decide which activities he wants to participate in
and keep the commitments to the troop that he made.
Yours in Scouting,
Dave Hultberg, ASM Troop 196, Keystone Area Council, Eagle Class of '67,
Brotherhood member Susquehannock Lodge XI, and a good old Bobwhite too
