I am passing on a bit of (awfull!!) news.
A developer has finally (after 11-12 years) gotten the go-ahead
to put up condos on what was Schiff Scout Reservation in Mendham, NJ.
I talked to Morris-Sussix Council this morning for confirmation. It
looks like the buildings will be put up in the lower areas, by the
lake. Also the Manor House and Schiff Hall are being refurbished and
preserved. The upper areas, including the JLT and Woodbadge
Training areas are "promised" to a National Land Trust and will be
preserved. They will also, probably, move the entrance to what was
referred to as "The North Gate". Some plaques from the old JLT days
have survived and are in the Woodbadge Lodge. It seems that the
James E. West Lodge burned to the ground many years ago and much
that was JLT connected was lost.
On May 13/14/15 Passaic Valley Council is sponsoring a Council Camporall
to be held on the parade field of the Training Area (JLT/JLITC or what
ever it was called over the years). I am receiving an information
packet from the council. I will pass what info is desired to anyone on
For those unfamiliar with Schiff....
The Mortimer L Schiff Scout Reservation was the East Coast equivalent
to the current Philmont Training Center. National Junior Leader Training
was held there each summer. There were also Woodbadge courses and a
Professional Scouter Training Center. The camp was sold (huge sobs....)
just before the National office moved from New Brunswick, NJ to Texas. Since
then the local councils have been able to use the facilities for campouts.
The weekend in May could be one of the last, large, camporees. Time will tell
whether any more camping will be done there.
[forgive me. I am in mourning.....]
