On Mon, 4 Apr 1994 10:46:19 EDT Keith Kaiser told of his troop's success with
fire building at the Klondike Derby:
>..when Troop 495 approaches the fire building competition at Klondike Derby,
>boys, leaders, parents, spectators of all kinds crowd around to watch.
>Because of this one event, Klondike Derby is now our favorite winter
>activity and flint & steel our favorite fire starting method.
This kind of "specialty" can really make a troop special. When I was a scout
our troop used semaphore signalling. A nearby troop was great at dutch oven
cooking and a third neighborhood unit used reflector ovens for "everything".
A troop should be good at all scout skills, and "great" at at least one.
Some of the units I have known over the years specialized by patrol. It's
worth the effort to give your unit that extra sense of pride!
