Last call for Eagletips Comments.....

Well...I've got everything we've talked about for the last year or so
downloaded this afternoon, and I'll start editing on Monday evening
(while Jessiann is watching some "norf and souf" mini-series. It will
take me about two weeks to get it all done, and then I'll upload it to
Jon Eidson and ask him to please DELETE the old version since the new
version will incorporate those comments and inquiries with the new.
The new version should be available before the "Day of the Green"
(St. Patrick's Day). That's my personal goal to getting it completed.
After the new version is uploaded there, I'll upload a copy to the
archives at America OnLine and to the Rec.Scouting archive. This
new version will contain questions and answers that were raised on
Rec.Scouting that members of our list responded to or answered on that
forum. This was simply done as an attempt to get as many diverse
answers and comments to our questions and NOT to attempt to
"consolidate the two lists". Most of you out there KNOW how I feel
about Rec.Scouting and the way they do business there.
Finally, with two weeks left, there were some of the original
questions I asked that were either deferred or not answered. Part of
the reason was that I was so long-winded in my posting, that when you
got to the questions, you didn't have fingerpower to answer. Part of
it was because the posting caused you to pause and think about what
I've (and others) have said about it. And part of it was simply
because you were too busy to reply.
Here are the questions that got very few (if any ) responses to them.
As with EVERYTHING we talk about here, please feel free to share and
gather input from Roundtables, District/Council Committee meetings
and gatherings, and from your fellow Scouters and our Scouts.
(theme music from one of those "news-reflection shows" swells up...)
ISSUE ONE: What "good" is the Eagle Scout Badge anymore, anyway?
In this era whereby most kids already are aware of their environment,
knows about their physical being, and are cynical about their
community, the nation and other people....what real good IS the
earning of a $9.75 badge? (I have several answers, so don't wait on
this one to be answered by me until we sum things up! hehhehehe)
ISSUE TWO: Are the present Eagle Scout Award requirements "out of
step" with the realities of the Nineties? What would you take out and
what would you add (the next posting will list the requirements for
the Eagle Scout Award, for those not familiar with it)
ISSUE THREE: What can our society (defined for the purpose of this
question as "politicans, the media, the public outside of those
familiar with Scouting, business and industry, and academia) do to
encourage the Eagle to apply their skills? Or should they just stay
out of it, and simply allow us in the program to apply that
ISSUE FOUR: Should their be a regional or National "Eagle Scout
College" whereby all Eagle Scouts would meet and share experiences and
feelings and "network"? (Yeah, I know about the NESA Eagle
Gatherings, but they are mostly old-geezer affairs and the younger
folks that have earned Eagle have to listen to a lot of "when I was in
Scouts" stories...I am talking something on a REGIONAL basis that
would allow schools, universities, the military, the businesses to
come in and talk with, interview with and select Eagle Scouts for
jobs and internships and the like. Imagine that! In order to be
there, you *have* to be a Eagle Scout! That itself *could* answer
issue three above!)
If you wouldn't mind, please REPLY using the ISSUES posted here
(as in Re: ISSUE ONE ). This will make it easier for me to file
and later extract them and download them than repling to the
list and giving it a general subject, as in "What good is it?"
Finally, I am asking for comments from ALL of us, especially those
that are new to Scouts-L over the past year or so....as you have
probably "caught on", there's NOBODY here that will "flame you"
or call you names (well, bad ones anyway!), and we all do VALUE
and RESPECT ALL of our contributer's comments, even if we don't
agree with them or consider them similiar to our own. So, if
you have a comment about these topics (or others, as we continue the
other topics), please reply to the LIST and tell us all how you feel.
