I thought that something like this would happen! This is what happens
when one hand don't (or can't) see what the other one is doing! And I
thought that they resolved all of this last fall...oh well...
It is TRUE...the National OA Committee decided BACK IN THE FALL NOT to
use the Order of the Arrow Lodge, Section or Regional Chief emblems.
The argument was that SOME adults felt that youth members should NOT
be wearing the Council or Regional Executive Board patches ("those
should be for us adults...") and that youth members should wear
something that identifies them as OA leaders rather than Scouting
But...the plot thickens....the Supply Division went ahead, thinking
that "oh yeah, they'll approve a youth patch..." and produced the Lodge
patches and the Sectional and Regional patches (the sectional and
regional patches were restricted and only available through the
Regional offices). The Supply Division even incorporated it into the
general mail catalog (page NE 4, if you have the current catalog).
The catalog number, for those interested, is R02409, and the cost is
WOW!! You *know* what happened when they put it in the catalog!!!!
There was such a run on the patches, that National Supply QUICKLY ran
out of the 2000 or so that they ordered (you know, 400 lodges, with
each Scout picking up 4 or 5 of them). So *now*, National is trying
(unsuccesfully) to "reclaim all of the Lodge patches" and have asked
local Councils to please return them to the Supply Division.
Bottom line: If you have one (or five or two), you'd better hang on
to them, because they are NOT coming back and National's trying to
get back the ones they have sent out!
Oh yeah...don't call the National Distribution Center and ask for one.
I just called and not only do they don't have them in stock, they
WON'T get anymore ever!
Second bottom line: a member of the Council's Executive Board is just
that...a member, youth or otherwise. Therefore, the appropriate
emblem for the Lodge Chief IS the Council Executive Board emblem.
This is the same appropriate emblem for the youth Explorer Presidents'
Association President or Chair; and in local Councils where they still
have a functioning NESA program, the position patch which should be
worn by the youth chair of the NESA chapter.
I can understand why OA chiefs NEED to be identified...but their
presence at board meetings should be enough...and the Council or
Regional Executive Board patches should be enough for those
(now, DON'T ask me what impact this all will have on the Chapter,
Lodge and Section Advisor patches....I don't know!)
