This subject could be 'sports and scouting again'. Due to a change
in scheduling by the city parks & rec. dept, 2 of my scouts who are
due to receive the Arrow of Light have a basketball playoff game at
the same time as the presentation across town. Normally, we don't
present awards to those not present, holding them for a later pack
meeting when the boy is present. However, these boys are already into
Boy Scouting so don't attend pack meetings (this is the Blue and
Gold), so that's probably not an option. Plus, the Arrow of Light
ceremony is kind of elaborate and I don't want to repeat it for 2
people later. I'm unhappy that they have chosen a basketball game
over the highest award in Cub Scouting, but it is their choice
(strangely, one kid's parents will be at the banquet even though he
What is the general wisdom of the net on this? Give the awards to
them later? Even though it is a Cub Scout award, I COULD present
them at a troop court of honor later? Leave them on their porch?
The parents know the significance of the award, both fathers are
Eagle Scouts. Suggestions?

If they're already into Boy Scouts, will they even attend a pack
meeting to accept the award? I think I would make that option
available to them, but with a less elaborate ceremony. A short
ceremony with candles and dim lights can be just as effective.
A word of caution to you and others going through Arrow of Light.
Our council processes AoL separately from Boy Scout applications.
We've had instances where the Boy Scout application was processed
before the AoL, then when the AoL bubbled up in the queue, the boy
was already a Boy Scout and ineligible to receive AoL. Technically,
most of the Webelos should not have been allowed to be Boy Scouts
without AoL as they hadn't completed 5th grade, but apparently that
wasn't verified. We've been waiting at least one month between
applying for AoL and submitting the Boy Scout application.
Also, there is an Arrow of Light patch available to Boy Scouts who
have completed AoL. This can be presented at a Court of Honor in
addition to , or in lieu of, the pack Arrow of Light ceremony.
