Nathan Brindle's note referred to a math professor who doesn't believe
in the use of calculators in the classroom. Lest the members of this forum
get the wrong idea, I would like to point out that this issue is one of
considerable controversy in the mathematics teaching profession. I, for one,
am a strong believer in the use of calculators. My department REQUIRES the use,
and even the purchase of a particular model. This is the wrong forum to discuss
the pros and cons of the issue, but Scouters who are planning their own teaching
programs should realize that there are two sides to the calculator issue also.
