Myself and a Request

My name is Doug Merrill. I am currently serving as an Assistant
Scout Master and Young Men's Advisor for Troop 494 in the Utah Lake
District of the Utah National Parks Council. I was one of those
young men who achieved far too much NOT to get his Eagle, yet did not
receive this award by the time I was 18 (I was a Life Scout for three
years.....OUCH). I have enjoyed the dialog regarding the Eagle age
and encouragement, and many of your thoughts will be discussed in our
leadership meetings. I am also intrigued by the Woodbadge program,
as well as the other variations on that theme. We are investigating
the opportunities for such training in our locality.
Most of the leaders here have been working with the youth in one way
or another for a few years, but the scouting program (to which we
have been recently assigned) is really struggling for organization.
Patrol and troop gatherings are usually somewhat disheartening and
un-organized. The interest of the boys in our case dwindles in
direct proportion to the preparedness of the leaders. So needless to
say, we are making an on-going concerted effort to create a "new
beginning" for our youth. Within this effort, we are attempting to
get a real grasp on the advancement progress and needs of each young
man in the troop. The paper charts and lists just don't cut it
anymore, so we would like to acquire a well designed, comprehensive
PC software application to maintain current and quickly updatable
records for each boy.
I would like to solicit your feedback regarding any DOS applications
you may be using for your organizational and advancement needs. Tell
me about the pros and cons of the package you are using, and if you
don't like what you are using, which package would you get instead.
We do not have a large budget, so we can't afford to buy a package on
the premise that it might or might not handle the full spectrum of
Scouting advancement and personal information. You can reply
directly to me at DougMe@WordPerfect.com or post your reply for all
to see. This may be an interesting public topic for a few days.
Thank you for all of the wonderful insight into your separate youth
programs, including scouting. I find all of the posted comments
extremely interesting and thought provoking. Those of you who
participate regularly are an inspiration to those like me who prefer
to sit back and listen to the professionals.

P.S. Are there any new programs established by which adult non-eagle
leaders can achieve the Eagle (or similar) award as encouragement for
the young men in the troop? I'm finding it difficult to inspire the
boys to achieve Eagle, being a Life scout myself.
