The Cub Scout Sports AND the Cub Scout Academia programs are supplemental progra
ms that BSA Cub Scouting offers to the boys to add to their regular den, pack, a
nd advancement programs. It is not an all inclusive pack activity and was never
meant to be. Keeping in mind that one of the major differences we have in CS v
s. say Little League, is that we in BSA allow all boys to partcipate at their ow
n speed and level. Thus, the sports program is meant to help hold the interest
of a young man very into sports, who is already perhaps participating in Soccer
anyway. He can get credit in CS towards his sport activity badge for that time
If, however, a young man is not inclined to sports, our program recognizes this,
and offers the academia programs as his choice. None of the programs are meant
to replace, supercede, or take the place of the den and pack program, who's goa
ls are to help the boy along his advancement trail and to learn and grow.
I truly do not know of any pack in ther 3 councils I work with that does not hav
e a boy working on either the sports or the academia badges, along with the den
and pack programs. There is no reason why the pack could not decide to use one
of the sports programs for a pack activity or theme.
Hope this helps. --- now back to work.
