Apart from Beaver Scouts most British meetings start with Flag Break. Our
custom is that the flag is rolled into a bundle and hoisted to the
masthead. The Pack or Troop is called to " Alert " and the P/L or Sixer
then jerks the halyard so the flag " breaks " . He or she then steps back
and salutes, the signal for the rest of the unit to salute also.
At the end of the day / meeting the flag is lowered in a similar
ceremony. We do not salute when the flag is lowered, but pay respect by
standing at the alert. The reason is that the salute is regarded as a
greeting to the Queen's Colour at flag raising.
