What about Eagle too late?
Besides the problem with young Eagles not really satisfying all requirements,
what about the problem with older Scouts returning to the program just
before their 18th birthdays? Often they are doing it because of not-so-
subtle parental pressure. The head of our sponsoring organization
recommends that parents not allow their Scout sons to drive until they
have earned their Eagle! I really disagree! I think that it's important
for the Scout to know that the Eagle was his accomplishment. If the
parents force him through it, he can never be sure how much was his doing,
and how much was theirs. Pushy parents need to back off as the Scout
approaches Eagle, not turn the screws. Encouragement and help should be
given, but the Scouts don't need to be hit with a big stick.
Is this a common problem?
