I'll add my $0.02 to the discussion...
As you will know by now, my association is co-ed.
However, we have both mixed and single-sex units, especially with
Scouts (there are virtually no single-sex Rover Crews, and Cub packs
are usually mixed). In the case of mixed units, there MUST be at least
a leader for each sex, with equal responsibilities. In single-sex
units, at least one of the leaders must be of the same sex as the
