In regards to this Child Protection Act:

Kathy, I think that your letter was quite appropriate, but I would hazard
a very good guess that Mr. Clinton will never get it, let alone read it.
I even have my doubts about his staff reading it. [It took his "staff"
3 months to respond to an Eagle invite!] The response you received is an
automated response. Some of my co-workers have sent e_mail to the
whitehouse and had the same reply. Frankly, my opinion is that BSA is
certainly being snubbed/slapped/put down/etc. quite publically.

It is difficult to take a stand for what one deems is right. I have had
to deal with that on a personal basis many times. The BSA has taken their
stand on some issues that puts them in direct conflict with the White House
and some VERY vocal minority groups. I get this inner wrench when I think
that my response COULD be "If you don't like it [BSA's stand], then LEAVE,
and then just leave us alone!" or "If you don't like the rules, then just
stay away!" I can certainly see that these responses can be seen as uncaring
and isolationist. However, it pains me a GREAT deal to see this organization
into which I have poured over 31 years being attacked. BSA is about 80 years
old & members of my family have been a part of it since the very beginning.
(Sorry, it just hurts.) I can see areas in the BSA where I feel that there
is room for change. But not when it comes to the issues of God ("A Scout is
REVERENT") and homosexuals. I hope the BSA never bends, for I won't.
BTW, on a personal note, should the above offend anyone. I apologize. I am
what some call a "Born Again Christian" (thank goodness the term is not used
very much anymore) with a Conservative Baptist "persuasion". I believe in
hating the sin and not the sinner. Where I cannot and will not condone
homosexuality, I TRY not to let a person's lifestyle prejudice me against
them (until they do something to influence that). I do make every attempt
to judge a person on what he or she is inside and not what he/she does.
"Merry Christmas to all (and to all a good night)"
