I, too, am NOT in favor of the First Class in a Year drive. It is
just too fast. I could not do it in the last troop I was in. Thank
goodness the new troop is a little slower. The only thing that I can
do now, as Advancement Chair, is to ensure that ALL the skills are
learned as they should be.
An answer to parents if their son is slowed down a little is to show
that these "wonder boys" do NOT know their stuff. And just stand your
ground. Show the requirements and get the scout to "fully" explain
what he learned. I know...easier said then done.
Put it this way, either the scout slows down up to 1st Class, or he
slows down for Star/Life simply because there are only so many
leadership roles to go around, nor are there any "special projects"
that can be substituted at the SM discretion.
