Jon, thanks for the welcome and the Intro file.
First of all my name is Paul Miles and I am the SM of Troop 18, Greenfield
Center, N Y (upstate near Saratoga Springs) Our Troop has about 28, kids 10
new scouts, 4 Venture scouts and the rest in between. This is my first
scouting year as SM (2 yrs. as ASM).
Previous to my appointment, the troop really did not function as a Scout troop
should. Not enough scout skills, very little advancement and it was not
organized in the Patrol method. My son and I were actually going to transfer
to a different troop this year for these reasons. Upon the retirement of the
previous SM, I was approached by the committee and offered the job. Things are
turning around and beginning to look up and I am looking forward to the rest
of the year.
One of the things that is exciting about our troop is that we have the
(almost) exclusive use of our own camp. A wooded tract with a stream, 6
lean-tos, a large covered pavilion with a bar-b-que pit and a campfire area
with seating for about 100 guests. Its a great spot and we plan to use it for
troop and patrol overnights. Two weeks ago we used for our first camp-out
under my leadership. We had worked on pioneering stuff in troop previously for
a month, scout skills in lashings and knot tying. So at this overnite our
troop worked together with each patrol doing a certain task and we built an 18
foot tower. I can't begin to tell how very proud of the boys I was. This type
of activity had not occured in the past 2 1/2 years that I was there - scouts
doing scout skills!
I am also looking forward to being interactive with the list. I'm sure I'll
have questions and hopefully some input for the list.
