Let me take a few minutes of your time to introduce myself:
My name is Lynn McKee, and I'm Scouter in Polaris District, Sam Houston
Area Council, Houston, Texas. I'm active on the District Committee (Exploring
(Roundtable & Explorer Officers Assn) and Training), I'm an Explorer Advisor for
a High Adventure Post, and a Troop Committee. The post is primarily involved in
backpacking and SCUBA diving, but we seem to find plenty of other activities to
keep us busy. Last summer we did the SCUBA Adventure at Sea Base, and next
summer we are going to Philmont. One
extreme to the other.
One of my favorite 'other' activites was staging a small plane wreck at a
camp-o-ree. Each troop was asked to have a designated (youth) emergancy first
aide responder 'in case' we needed thier assistance. We tipped off
the SM's at the Friday night cracker barrell. Then on Sat. evening after
the dishes should have been washed, a demolitions expert set off some black
powder charges, and the adult staff started running the the campsites hollering
for help. The responders then meet up with squad from the Civil Air Patrol (who
just happend to be conducting an exercise near by ;-)) to find the plane. Well
the found the plane and some of my explorers who made up to look like victims.
All in all, it turned out more realistic than we thought possible, and caused
many (youth and adults) to contemplate the meaning of "Be Prepared".
Well, I'm looking forward to exchanging ideas with y'all.
Yours in Scouting,
Eagle Scout '78
