We do some magic with ropes (like cutting them in half and tying them
together and making them whole again) to get attention. We do some tricks
like tying overhand knot without letting go of ends. That usually helps
get their attention. Knot relays used to be one of our favorite activities
for patrol competition. We used a different knot each week for six to
eight weeks. We would then take a break of four to five weeks and repeat
the cycle. Sitting and learning knots is BORING but if you can do something
exciting with it it gets better. At summer camp we have a list of 40 knots.
Check them off as you do them and are good enough to show someone else how
to tie it. Almost no one completes the full list.
