One game that we have tried on an incident hike is to use a large length of rop
e (5-6 metres, about 20 foot), with a member of the team tied (using the approp
iate knot!) on each end. They than have to use the rope to tie other knots, sti
ll tied on the end themselves - a clove hitch round a tree etc. To involve more
of the team, knots for joining differnt thicknesses of rope can be attempted.
Although not of apparent use at first sight, this does teach the kids to think
about the knots in a slightly different way. It's also very good for teamwork e
valuations, and is great fun to watch!
