There has been a discussion about BSA becoming a 'designated agency'
through our UWay. The UWay funding for BSA has been dropping
drastically the last few years to the point that it's now a good
bit less than our SME goal (a few years ago it was 3xSME). For
political reasons, Planned Parenthood was dropped as a UWay agency
a couple of years ago, but was kept for 'designations only' and its
funding tripled. Some expect that BSA would fare similarly. For one
thing, our contract with UWay forbids us from soliciting directly
(through SME or otherwise) individuals who don't have a history of
BSA contributions.... so, we can solicit known Friends of Scouting,
but can't recruit NEW ones. Becoming a 'designated agency' would free
us from some of these restrictions.
Actually, I don't have a good argument for people who question UWay's
contribution to BSA (or GSUSA) anyway. Not that we don't do good work,
or deserve contributions, but it isn't the sort of thing that most
people think UWay agencies are for.
