Our troop's SPL election is held on our family 'super campout' in June
every year just after school is out. SPL (and ASPL(s), Historian, Scribe,
QM, etc) serve 1 yr, unless something unforseen happens.
PL's are elected in late Sept, after 1st fall campout & a couple of troop
meetings. PL's serve 6mos then another election. PL can be re-elected
once only to ensure the office gets a chance to rotate.
We have recently instituted Troop JLT and all PL's APL's etc must agree to
attend that if they haven't already done it. Eventually SPL will be
required to have served as a PL and done Troop JLT.
Regarding your 50miler, Major troop events (even monthly campouts) require
some ongoing promotion. You can't assume anybody still has a troop
calendar, let alone they've read it. Monthly updates on progress, slide
show and/or map planning, looking at pictures help. Signup deadlines are a

events, as well as special mailings to scouts, followup calls to those
expressing interest, etc. One bonus, a scout who has earned eagle, can go
on the trip free! (paid from troop funds, again once only). This has been
