Thanks for all the responses so far, too numerous to respond to
individually. This SCOUTS-L is great. Much faster than roundtable.
As to the Scouting for Food, I spoke with the CM last night and it turns
out we all had the wrong impression. He is also coordinating the drive
for all the units in our town and he was concerned that we wouldn't have
enough boys show up for proper coverage. No hurt feelings at all. I've
known him for years and he promised me that if a problem came up I would
be the first to hear about it. My biggest concern was souring relations
with the Pack. The Cubs are still going to help with the pick-up, but in a
nother area which has only two small troops covering it. However if we do
happen to have a small turnout, the "Blue Cavalry" may come to the rescue,
and a lesson will be learned (hopefully).
I also talked with our UC last night (all these phone calls, a
screen-printing class, and a Pack Committee meeting and I still got up at
4:30 this morning). He will be coming to our next Committee meeting, this
was already decided at the last Committee meeting, to show Fast Start.
He, however, was not as emphatic as you folks were about the boys running
the program. He hedges quite a bit and says that they should run as
much as they are capable to do. That leaves a little too much room for
judgement, in my opinion. I can tell you right now that one of our
Committee members doesn't believe that the boys are capable of anything
and all will turn to shambles if we try. She even discouraged Troop
elections for SPL, "The boys will just vote for their buddies". I'm
hoping that between Fast Start and the boy-run program actually succeeding
she'll come around. I know she won't go to any training.
OK - two more MB questions:
1) What are the requirements for the Swimming MB Counselor. Does he/she
have to be trained as a lifeguard or anything?
2) Can the former SM sign off on Camping MB if he hasn't filled out a
Counselor form? He was SM until July and did the work with them. We don't
recharter until December. I'm just worried that being a Required MB we
could jeopardize a boy at the Eagle BoR.
Thanks again for all the help so far. Someday I hope to be on the giving
